Trip to Saipan

I got home about a week ago from Saipan . I was there for about 10 days working on a project. Saipan is a small island (5 miles x 11 miles) between Japan and Australia.

During World War II the Japanese occupied Saipan. The Americans invaded the island in 1944. This island (and the one right next to it, Tinian) allowed the US to launch bombing missions targeting mainland Japan. Tinian is where the Enola Gay took off from with the atomic bomb which was dropped on Hiroshima.

Hope you enjoy the pictures I took while I was there. The first 3 are from this past trip and the rest are from an extended (3 month) trip I had in 2007.

This tank was about 100 yards off the beach and (undoubtedly) got stuck during the US landings and has been in the same spot ever since. There are at least 2 more tanks just off shore.

After about 5 minutes of photographing the tank, a boat load of kids (and one adult) showed up and they all jumped out and started playing on the tank. I asked them if they could jump off the tank for me - which allowed me to get this photo.
They will beat their swords into plowshares...

This is the interior of the last Japanese command bunker. The bunker is part of a memorial area.

One of the few sunsets where the sun wasn't behind clouds (at least for a moment or two).

My daughter enjoys the last few rays of sun.

This is one of my favorite photos. This is a 30 seconds exposure of a carnival ride at the Liberation Day festival.
